Long-term storage of documents in standard kraft can lead to paper brittleness, discoloration, and ultimately the destruction of the material. Storing items in a pH neutral compartment ensures that no unwanted acid will permeate the documents. In general, the best way to ensure that materials are kept in their original form is:
- Store items in acid-free (pH neutral) folders and compartments. In addition, an alkaline buffer solution can be used for sensitive documents, or items known to contain acid.
- Keep files in a cool, moisture controlled environment. Essentially, for every 10°F decrease in temperature the life of paper material doubles. Optimal humidity is 50%, although this may vary slightly depending on materials.
- Avoid light, particularly fluorescent, as it will cause deterioration. Try to store items in natural light (not direct sunlight), or purchase a UV-shield for particularly sensitive documents.
- Control mold by controlling temperature and humidity. Keep air circulating as well, stagnant air increases the likelihood of an outbreak.
